My name is Terry Kane and I’ve been a registered physiotherapist in Alberta since 1985.
After a twenty-five year career working in clinics such as the University of Calgary Sportsmedicine Centre, Calgary Chronic Pain Centre as well as with the Calgary Flames and Canadian Olympic Hockey Team,in 2014, I had the good fortune to join the Calgary West Central Primary Care Network as a Primary Care Physiotherapist.
As a Primary Care Physiotherapist with the PCN, I spent one day a week at five different family practice clinics conducting orthopaedic triage assessments, offering unhurried patient education and home based rehab exercise programs on behalf and in support of family physicians. Apart from patient care, I consulted directly with family physicians on diagnoses, diagnostic imaging, treatment recommendations and drafting referral letters for specialist services such as orthopaedic surgery.
Due to budgetary changes within Alberta’s Primary Care Networks, Calgary West Central PCN was forced to terminate the physiotherapy program in 2016, at which time I joined Drs. Phillip van der Merwe, Margot McLean and Martin Harvey at Fourth Street Clinic where I continue to offer Primary Care Physiotherapy in the mornings Monday to Friday.
Based on four years of working directly with family physicians, I believe the opportunity to embed an experienced physiotherapist in Primary Care Clinics offers the following benefits (to name just a few);
- Improves the standard of patient care in the diagnosis and management of neuromuscular and orthopaedic conditions,
- Enables family physicians to refer their patients for a physiotherapy consult within their own clinic.
- Helps to support initiatives of Choosing Wisely to reduce premature or inappropriate imaging, dependence on pain medications, non-evidence based treatments and premature surgical consultations.
- Improves patient education and patient engagement in self-management strategies such as pain flare up prevention and home based rehab exercises.
If you have a unused examination room in your clinic in the afternoon or Saturday, I would welcome the opportunity to offer my services within your clinic as often as you wish.
If you’re interested in learning more about offering my services in your clinic, please feel free to contact me directly by phone at 403-714-7617 or by email at firstname.lastname@example.org. All inquires will be treated confidentially.
Thank you for your time.
